Foto ilustrativăOver the past two years, Romanian pensions have been frozen whilst inflation has risen to a record high for this period – exceeding 10%. According to simulations cited by Realitatea PLUS, a pensioner receiving the minimum pension has lost more than 1,500 RON in purchasing power in a single year.
There are signals that pensions will be indexed next year, however the exact percentage has not yet been determined. Some experts argue that the increase should be at least 12%, whilst the President of the Fiscal Council is calling for caution regarding inflation estimates.
How much pensioners have lost in two years of frozen pensions and high inflation
- Minimum pension (1,281 RON) – estimated annual loss: 1,500 RON
- Pension of 3,000 RON – estimated annual loss: 4,300 RON
- Higher pensions, above 5,000 RON – estimated annual loss: 11,100 RON
How much pensions could increase from January
The calculation formula under discussion is inflation plus 50% of the real growth in the average gross wage across the economy. In a scenario based on a 12% increase, the rises would be as follows:
- Pension of 1,500 RON: +180 RON
- Pension of 2,000 RON: +240 RON
- Pension of 2,500 RON: +300 RON
- Pension of 3,000 RON: +360 RON
- Pension of 4,000 RON: +480 RON
The scenario of indexation based solely on estimated inflation
For 2027, inflation is estimated at 2.9%. In this case, the increases would be considerably smaller:
- Pension of 1,500 RON: +43.50 RON, rising to 1,543.50 RON
- Pension of 2,000 RON: +58 RON, rising to 2,058 RON
- Pension of 3,500 RON: +101 RON, rising to 3,601 RON
- Pension of 4,000 RON: +116 RON, rising to 4,116 RON
