WCST simplified

Card Sorting

Match each card to one of the 4 reference cards. The rule changes silently — you must detect it from feedback.

You will see 4 reference cards (different in shape, color, and number). For each stimulus card, choose which of the 4 it matches — but the rule is NOT told to you. You can match by shape, color, or number of elements. The system only tells you if you guessed correctly. After 8 consecutive correct answers, the rule changes without notice — you must rediscover it.

Test of executive function (set-shifting). Those with frontal deficits tend to perseverate on the old rule after a switch.

What is WCST?

Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (Grant & Berg 1948) is the standard test for assessing cognitive flexibility and set-shifting — the ability to abandon a rule of thought and adopt a new one when circumstances change. Highly sensitive to dysfunction of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Our simplified version uses 4 reference cards and changes the rule (shape / colour / number) after 8 consecutive correct answers. The primary indicator is the number of "perseverative errors" — attempts that continue to apply the old rule after it has changed. High perseverative errors suggest difficulties with behavioural adaptation, seen in frontotemporal dementia, frontal brain lesions, and certain psychiatric disorders.

Based on scientific research

Sortarea cartilor is a digital adaptation of clinically validated neuropsychological tests. Below you will find the official sources underpinning the methodology, along with international and Romanian medical institutions you can consult for a professional assessment.

📚 Studies and clinical validation

The original scientific papers and validation studies that demonstrate this paradigm measures what it claims to measure.

🌍 Recommendations from international medical institutions

🇷🇴 Clinical assessment in Romania

If low scores recur, speak with a doctor. Here is where you can seek specialist advice in Romania — the only national Alzheimer's NGO, the relevant ministry, university neurology clinics, and accredited medical universities.

Important: This game is informational and educational. It is not a medical diagnostic tool. For a clinical assessment, consult a neurologist or psychiatrist. Repeatedly low scores are worth discussing with your GP as an indicator (similar to weighing yourself at home), not as a diagnosis.
